Background to the Study

Industrialization has been the primary driver of economic expansion in the majority of developing nations, including Nigeria; consequently, many governments that have come and gone have made it a priority to investigate and implement strategies that will foster the expansion of their respective industrial sectors (Amedahe, 2022). In the Nigerian construction industry, the influence of an enduring employee's safety on organizational productivity and loss control cannot be overemphasized. This is especially true in the areas of setting minimum safety management standards, safe work procedures, and environmental management standards (Lourandos, 2008).

In light of the fact that assigned tasks can only be safely accomplished when the work environment is safe and conducive for the execution of the assigned duties, whether it be construction, manufacturing, or servicing, it is assumed that an organization's employees safety measures have a direct relationship with employees' productivity. Given the fact that assigned tasks can only be safely accomplished when the work environment is safe and conducive for the execution of the assigned duties, it is also assumed that any phenomenon that affects human production capacity will invariably affect organizational productivity, thus improving workers (Galliker, 2000).

In addition to the imperative to cut down on or get rid of accidents, construction businesses ought to instill a culture of safety within their staff in order to satiate the legal, social, and moral duties of the community in which they are working. According to Dorman (2000), in order for businesses to effectively improve health, safety, and environmental conditions, the costs of ill health and accidents must be economic, internal, variable, and visible. This is necessary for businesses to provide effective improvement of health, safety, and environmental conditions. Court (2003), in his contribution to corporate personnel safety management, sees the issue of safety as necessary in every business. He further says that developing a better working environment and preventing injury from work are the two most important strategies of increasing productivity. The issue of ensuring the safety of workers while they are on the job is currently garnering attention on a global scale. And Nigeria can't be forgotten about either (Baker, & Green, 2021).

There is a significant amount of absenteeism at big scales and a high prevalence of industrial accidents because to poor health (Kohn and Mark 1996). The common law compels every employer of labor to guarantee that the work force is safe and that employees conducting hazardous work are protected sufficiently. There are some jobs that pose a significant risk to employees' health and safety. In such a scenario, prioritizing workplace safety as a method of improving both operational effectiveness and overall performance is an absolute must (Eze, 2006).

Therefore, it is becoming an increasingly important concern for management to create working circumstances that enhance the employees' sense of safety in the workplace. Barriers are erected in the form of guards, clothes, protected spaces, and other such things, among other things (Bavon, 2022). It is well knowledge that lowering the likelihood of accidents in the workplace tends to boost workers' perceptions of their own personal security while simultaneously lowering their levels of worry. Due to the fact that individuals are no longer preoccupied with their worries, the likelihood of them being involved in an accident has decreased as a direct result of this. In addition, businesses engage in awareness efforts, which use a variety of personnel communication channels and competitions, in order to encourage employees to prioritize safety (Cole, 1993). Participants in groups that have low accident rates are generally awarded monetary prizes if their group wins a contest. The objectives of these competitions and the methods utilized might be very different, but the one constant is the premise that it is in everyone's best interest to avoid risk wherever possible (Bavon, 2022). In the Nigerian industrial climate, the significance of an ongoing employee safety management on organizational productivity and loss control cannot be overemphasized. Neither can the importance of preventing employee injuries. As a result, the purpose of this research study was to explore the effect that industrial health and safety management has on the productivity of workers, with particular attention paid to Unilever Nigeria PLC.
